La Tomatina, The Food Fight Festival

La Tomatina is a food festival that happens on the last Wednesday of August every year. It happens in the town of Bunol, near to Valencia in Spain. It is such a popular festival that thousands of people around the globe gather to fight it. This is known as the world’s biggest food fight, where more than a hundred metric tons of ripe tomatoes are thrown on the streets.

The accommodation is limited in Bunol, so the large crowd who come to celebrate this festival stay in Valencia, the nearby place which is just 38km away from Bunol. Due to the emerging crowd, prior hotel reservation will be good to confirm your room.
Now, what exactly happens in Bunol? On the day of the festival around, 11 am many trucks haul the tomatoes in the center of the town, Plaza Del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, a place where they are less expensive. The festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice, this process takes a long time. The festival starts with no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. The moment it begins, the battle is usually going like every man for himself.

An hour later, the fight ends, and no one is supposed to throw tomatoes. The mess on the streets is cleaned by using fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The people have to clean themselves from the water at Bunol river as the authorities are more concerned with cleaning the streets rather than the people. After cleaning the streets, it looks fresh due to the acidity in the tomatoes. You can check for rated Spain Hotels in Bunol and book your rooms with amazing hotel deals available online.

There are a few rules that are to be followed in La Tomatina. This include:

* You are not supposed to rip-off other people’s dresses.
* Safe distance should be maintained from trucks.
* The throwing of tomatoes should be stopped as soon as the second shot is heard.

Though no one is aware of the history of this food fight festival, it has become a strong tradition in the city of Bunol since 1945. Many myths are being told regarding the origin of La Tomatino that include a local food fight among friends, a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the anarchic aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage.

Another popular theory is that a violent mob attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. It was enjoyed so much that it was repeated from the next year and is continuing till now. The holiday was banned during the Spanish State period under Francisco Franco for having no religious significance. Later it returned in the 1970s after his demise.

The festival is in honor of the town's patron saints, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats, a title of the Virgin Mary.
